Memorizing

  • by

I had a surprise today. Two brothers, middle schoolers, told me they are reading my book of poetry for a school assignment. Their parents bought the book on Amazon and decided it would be appropriate as part of their sons’ school assignment on poetry. The boys said they really like the book and to prove it, the younger one recited, from memory, one of the poems, “Portages on the Mind”. He was flawless, with understanding and emphasis. They both said that they really liked that poem because it reminds them of camping with their dad. What a wonderful gift! Here is the poem he recited.

Portages On The Mind

Water welcomes paddle

With whispered consent.

Canoe glides

Over the calm lake.

Progress is measured

By tree-lined shore

Flowing swiftly past.

But getting to the next lake

Is more than mere gliding

On placid waters.

Portages bar the way.
